Francis McDougall

Francis Thomas McDougall (1817-16 November 1886 [1]) was the first Bishop of Labuan and Sarawak from 1849 to 1868.

McDougall was born in Sydenham and educated at King’s College London and Magdalen College, Oxford. While at Oxford, rowed in the winnning Oxford eight in the 1842 Boat Race.[2]

McDougall and his wife sailed for Borneo via the Cape ad Singapore on 30th Dec, 1847, arrived in Sarawak on 29th June, 1848, and he was appointed the first Bishop of Labuan and Sarawak in 1849.[3][4] Returning to England in 1868[5] he was appointed Vicar of Godmanchester. Later he was Archdeacon of Huntingdon[6] and then of the Isle of Wight.
